In recent years, it has become increasingly important for businesses in particular to be more aware of the impact that they are having on climate change. Monitoring your usage

The initial stage of cutting your costs is to install a smart metering system in your business. The information from the meter is stored on a computer system and logged through an internal intranet, so that your emissions can be calculated by analysing this information to establish cost cutting areas.

The system is extremely adaptable and can be expanded without limitation to monitor for example electricity, water and gas. Monitoring the flow of these resources can lead to the detection of leaks and wastage at an early stage.

A BMS (Building Management System) can be linked into the control panel of a smart metering system. This enables a company to control air conditioning, lighting, heating, etc. from a central point. This system is proving very popular with larger organisations.

Changing light fittings

Energy saving light fittings can be installed for example in warehouses, offices and toilet areas. Occupancy sensors can be installed which can dim down to 10 per cent and once sensed will operate back up at 100 per cent.

These fittings can also have daylight sensors installed so they will only operate when the room is at a chosen light level. This will stop any lights being used unnecessarily during the day when there is sufficient ambient light levels and will reduce energy.

Air conditioning units

While air conditioning units are necessary in many commercial and industrial workplaces, they are often installed with only two power settings – on and off. Elec-Check can install air conditioning units for your business with override controllers by fitting a manual override switch into an office area, which will power the unit on for a chosen time, which you can select. This stops air conditioning units being left on unnecessarily while areas are not in use.

By reducing unnecessary use of your air conditioning units, your energy and carbon emissions will be dramatically lowered, so a big cost saving can be made.

Sub Metering

Elec-Check can provide you with a sub meter to allow you to view information about your energy usage. By analysing where high levels of energy are being used, you will be able to significantly cut your energy output and bills, and this information can be used to bill a third party if necessary.

Door and window switches

Door and window switches can be used to dramatically reduce your energy and carbon emissions, by cutting out other energy resources when they are not required. By fitting a switch to a door which is linked to your heating system, when the door opens, the switch cuts out the heating system and when the door closes, the system begins to operate again.

Using a window switch can have the same effect, and can be linked to air conditioning units which will shut down when a window is opened.
Window and door switches are particularly useful in warehouses which have roller shutter doors in place, meaning energy and carbon resources are quickly wasted.
